This book looks back and marvels at the changes that have taken place since the 1830s when the town’s population was a mere 1,700, compared to its present-day population of 180,000. With the establishment of the new ‘unitary’ Borough of Swindon on 1 April 1997, Swindon can look forward to the dawn of a second century and an eventual City status as its next historical milestone.
